With Christmas soon upon us I thought I'd give my Travelista European inspired gift ideas.

Claus Porto soaps have been made in Porto, Portugal for the last 117 years. Originally founded by two German chemists, Ferdinand Claus and Georges Schwedder, the company has evolved but still uses artisinal methods and strives to create works of art. The exotic and intoxicating blends of fragrances are sure to entrance anyone: grapefruit and fig, acacia and tuberose, citron and verbena, lime and basil are just a few of the inspiring fragrance combinations the company produces.

The packaging is gorgeous as well. Some soaps come in an Art Deco inspired wrapping while others take a nod from the Portuguese palette found in its famous tiles. In addition to the wonderful soaps they also produce hand lotions, bath products, candles, and products for men. They were recently included in Oprah's list of Favorite Things for 2007, if Oprah likes them you know they've got to be good.

Travelista European Trend Report - Purple Passion

Purple was a predominant color on the streets of Europe this fall, in line with the trend of bold jewel toned colors. Punches of purple accessories enliven a neutral travel wardrobe and get you in on the trend.

The easiest way to integrate the color purple with your travel outfits is a scarf. A pashmina type scarf looks great especially over a neutral coat. A purple sash belt, purple colored gloves, or a cute eggplant beret provide personality to travel neutrals. A plum handbag provides functionality to the trend.

Several fashionistas were spotted sporting purple tights. This look is doable with a good, versatile travel dress.

Remember when integrating color into a travel wardrobe, a little goes a long way. Stick to using accessories to integrate color with your travel neutrals. Purple complements most travel neutrals. Pair purple with black or brown. Purple gives gray a sophisticated yet fashiony twist.

Travelista European Trend Report - Trench Coats

Every style, shape, and color of trench coat were seen on the streets of Europe. While the trench coat may be experiencing a "trend moment" right now no one can deny it's power as a classic.

Trench coats are a great piece of outerwear for your travel wardrobe. They add instant chic in addition to being a functional piece of clothing. They look great over pants /jeans and pair well with travel dresses and tights as well.

Lightweight trenches can last into colder months by layering over turtlenecks, sweater dresses, or chunkier knits (but not too bulky). Adding scarves and hats will also extend it's seasonal wear.

Choose a style that best works for your body and your style. Classic is always best. However, sometimes an update of a classic can look fresh and modern. Trenches that have a metallic sheen, patterned or short are just a few of the updated versions.

Single breasted styles will keep the lines clean, double breasted styles must be chosen carefully to avoid looking bulky. Wearing your trench belted will provide the most flattering look but the trench can also be worn open with the belt tied in the back.

Your outerwear will be the item most people will see first so make sure it is flattering and comfortable. During the cooler and winter months what you wear underneath your coat won't be as noticeable so a nice coat will take you far.

What to Wear and What NOT to wear in Churches in Italy

Dressing appropriately is required to enter some churches in Italy. A dress code is strictly enforced in places such as St. Peter’s in the Vatican. Surprised tourists may find themselves stranded waiting for less than flattering “loaners”. Don’t find yourself in the same situation, follow these guidelines on the days you are planning to visit Italian churches. If you need more information about what to wear to Europe check out the Travel Clothes Guidelines.

So what should be avoided?
Basically, don’t dress like Britney Spears when entering churches, these are places of worship and therefore appropriate dress is required:

No mini-skirts

No exposed midriffs

No short shorts

No exposed knees

No exposed shoulders

No tank tops

What is considered appropriate when visiting Italian churches?

Clothing that covers the shoulders

Skirts, shorts, or dresses that go past the knee or pants (jeans OK)

Tops that completely cover the midriff area

Wearing a shawl to cover up bare shoulders is considered acceptable

If you only plan to wear shorts during your trip use a pareo and wear it as a wrap skirt to cover up upon entering churches

Men should expect to wear pants to enter most major churches. Also short or long sleeve shirts are fine, NO tank tops.

Not all churches enforce this dress code but it is best to err on the side of caution. Always pack a shawl or cardigan in case you need to conform to dress requirements.

Travelista European Trend Report - Jeans are OK, Really

In the past denim might not have been OK to wear in Europe because it was considered too casual. That is so no longer the case.

Everyone, I mean everyone wears jeans - they are perfectly acceptable. They are nearly as ubiquitous as they are here in the states. Now, it's not just any jeans mind you, they must fit well- that means no relaxed, pleated, or tapered styles. Flattering styles include the bootcut, trouser cut, and wide leg styles.

A decent top, doesn't have to be fancy, a nice jacket add a scarf and you are set.

If you've wondered if jeans are acceptable for a travel wardrobe, rest assured they are. Of course denim in a travel friendly fabric with a high synthetic content is preferable, especially if you will being doing laundry on the road. However, that can be hard to find.

I advise just packing one pair too avoid excess bulky items in your luggage.

If you really want to save luggage room wear your bulky items, such as jeans, on travel days. Then they won't take up precious room in your suitcase.

Travelista European Trend Report - Orange Crush on Paris

While in Paris recently I saw pops of orange everywhere. It seems the city is enamored of orange and I saw it on everything from scarves, dresses, handbags, and sneakers.

I don't recommend the full on orange treatment for travel wear but a few shots of orange here and there will definitely spice up your travel wardrobe. An orange handbag or scarf is an easy way to incorporate the color. For the adventuresome, shoes with orange in them would complement denim, brown, or gray.

I bought a scarf that had orange in it after noticing the trend in Paris. It's fun to see what the local fashion trends are in European cities, usually you can get in on the look easily by checking out the local clothing retailers. If it's a color, as in this instance, I generally always go for a scarf. It's cheap (usually less than 10 Euros) and easy to pack for the remainder of my trip-remember you still have to lug around what you buy. Travelista European Trend Report - Chucks are Chic

In my opinion, Converse All Stars, or Chucks never really go out of style. They are an enduring classic and while wild prints and colors may bedeck some of them, the shoe itself is always identifiable.

During my past trip to Europe I saw that Chucks are a definite trend right now. The style most that was most prevalent was the classic Chuck style in white or cream and either low or high top. I spotted these on everyone from fresh faced teenagers to glamorous fashion types.

The prevailing trend In Europe is to wear Chucks with skinny jeans. I also saw them combined with trouser pants for a smart effect. Hi- tops worn with skinny, cropped pants were also common.

Many Europeans have adopted the classic sneaker and it was interesting to see the different ways they integrated it with their own personal style. As you can see from my photos above one woman has chosen to combine her Chuck hi-tops with a luxurious fur, avant garde designer pants, and a classic Chanel purse. The second woman has chosen a more artistic route with her textured vest and monochromatic look.

For a casual sort of chic Chucks might have potential as travel shoe. Especially if you are younger or just fancy yourself young they can be modified to work as a walking shoe. I've never found my Chucks to be that comfortable but with a little customization the comfort level could improve.

The backs of the shoe always cause a blister on me so Heavenly Heelz by Foot Petals should solve that problem. If you are planning on doing a significant amount of walking insoles could be a handy modifications as well. In case these don't work out a blister kit always helps.

I probably will not be using Chucks as a travel shoe anytime soon but I'm thinking about picking up a fresh pair and pairing them with my my trouser cut pants as I saw expertly done in Paris. The Converse All Star is definintely a classic and one to consider when making your next shoe purchase.

My Perfect Travel Outfit

In preparing and packing for my last trip to Europe I test drove a new travel outfit . I usually rely on a combination of denim and black trousers, fitted or detailed tees, fitted button down oxfords, thin knit sweaters and a trench or heavy coat (depending on weather).

This time I decided to include a dress into my repetoire, actually I included two. My trousers are quite comfortable and that is usually what I wear on the plane. They don't dig in to my waist necessarily but I thought I would try something new.

Following my Travel Clothes Guidelines I found that I already had a lightweight black mini shirt dress, I added black leggings, and my black travel shoes as my airplane "travel" outfit. It was quite a comfortable outfit as there was no binding waistband to have to deal with on the long flight over and I felt dressed and ready to go once we landed. Of course I also had my trusty pashmina wrap which served me well when the plane cabin got chilly.

I know some of you may be sick of leggings by now but they really are a useful inclusion in your travel wardrobe. Tights are also an alternative but they might be a bit too constricting to wear on a long plane ride. I was relieved once I landed to see leggings everywhere and worn by everyone, young and not so young (more on that in my upcoming Travelista Trend Reports). I topped off the look with my trusty trench and I was set. This was definitely a better alternative to the sweat suits favored by some while traveling and I felt super comfortable.

My travel shoes are Dansko Professional Clogs. My Dansko's have been on many trips and logged many miles, this time I upgraded to the black patent style. Now these won't be seen on many Europeans but they are comfortable and they give me an extra 2 inches of height, sacrifices must be made for functionality. Check out my footwear section for more options.

A ballet flat style shoe can also be a great travel shoe. The Cole Haan Nike Air Series has Nike technology that makes for a comfortable walking experience.

Ray Bans Redux

Just take those old Ray Bans off the Shelf…I’ll sit and wear them by myself…

OK, enough of that old time rock 'n roll, and reminiscing about Tom Cruise shakin’ his moneymaker in his undies. Those old standard Ray Bans of the Eighties are back and it’s not just American celebs that are sporting them.

Many serious fashionistas (i.e. international magazine editors and buyers) in Europe were seen sporting the Ray Ban Red Wayfarer style.

On the streets, chic Europeans were donning every other style of Ray Bans, including eyeglass frames. I saw lots of Ray Bans aviator styles worn on both girls and guys. I even spotted an older gentleman in a suit and white Ray Ban eyeglass frames pulling off the look as only an Italian can.

Italians in particular are fans of the iconic brand. When compared to other luxe sunglasses brands such as Gucci or Dior, Ray Bans come at a better price point.

The reasonable price and classic, yet modern, styling contributes to their popularity. Classic styles can stand the test of time and are worth the extra investment that these require, as opposed to just picking up a pair at the drugstore.

If you are planning a trip, remember you will be on the streets a lot and good sunglasses can be a great accessory. Plus the right pair can add instant glam, who doesn’t love that?

Now, I’ve got to find and dust off my old Wayfarers. I love how classics never go out of style!

Leggings Leeway

Black opaque tights dominated the runway. Barely a bare legged model in sight, many a designer paired tights with frocks and skirts.

This look is one of the easiest to pull off. We can find opaque tights just about anywhere. They can still be paired with long tunics, minidresses, denim minis, and ballet flats. Tights are a fantastic travel item because you can also layer them under pants on colder days for an extra layer of warmth.

I won’t discount the practicality of including leggings in your travel wardrobe but they were not a major force on the runways for Fall ’07. The leggings idea has now morphed into black opaque tights or super slender black pants. Retailers still love leggings and they are not going to disappear any time soon. Aside from the quirky look they provide, they are quite functional.

Leggings can be a key layering item in your travel wardrobe. They can be worn under skirts or dresses and provide an extra layer on cooler days. But to remain au courant tights consider including tights on your packing list.

Wide Wish List

Pants Wide Open

Perhaps as a reaction to the ubiquitous skinny of last season we see the resurgence of the wide leg jean. Can I just say, “Yay!” I do own skinnies but it takes some advanced styling to make them work when you aren’t quite so skinny yourself. The new wider cut of jeans helps balance out most body types and is a more forgiving silhouette.

The new wider cuts come in several versions. A trouser cut jean will skim the hip and end in a wider width than usual. Dramatic, sweepingly uber wide cuts are also springing up. Find a happy medium because the uber wide variety will increase the bulk of your suitcase and may be a little less than utilitarian while traveling.

If you decide to sport the wide leg remember to keep your tops somewhat slim to balance the look. For example, don’t pair wide leg jeans with a trapeze top because volume + volume doesn’t work. A fitted tee, slim-cut blouse, structured oxford, or slim cut cardigan work well.

Dresses can definetly be a workhorse in a travelers wardrobe. Especially if you choose a versatile and flattering one. Frock and Roll

I must admit I’ve become a fan of the ease a dress provides. Dresses still made an impact on fall runways. Dresses with opaque tights were the pairing of choice for many designers.

The dress has been drawn in with a narrower cut. Less of an exaggerated trapeze shape was evident this season. The silhouette has tightened up a bit with the shape approximating more of a shift or sheath style. Swingy styles still made an appearance, just less prevalent than last season.

Fall travel wardrobes can include dresses with just a few styling tricks. Throw a structured blazer/trench over your dress or a long cardigan then add tights, flats or flat boots. Layering dresses over black turtlenecks modernizes and winterizes your favorite dress as well (and don’t forget the black tights). Another option is a lightweight sweater dress.

The dress should conform to Travelista travel clothes guidelines and be a lightweight, washable material. The dress should also work well with your travel footwear. Black footwear blends in with black tights so there is less emphasis on what should be functional footwear (leave the platforms at home).

Fall European Travel Outfit Ideas

Here are some ideas for Fall Travel Outfits. Remember when assembling your travel wardrobe: lightweight layers are key, dark neutrals work best, accesories keep your look from being plain, don't forget your scarf.

As I've always said you can't go wrong with black. In this instance the black trousers and a black jacket allow extra color brought by the patterned shirt. A simple black coat and pants lends itself to any number of easy to put together and pull off outfits. Flats complement and are comfortable. Smart looking trainers would also easily work for a comfy, funky look that is totally Europe appropriate. Don't forget to add a scarf of some sort.

Black pants and top keep the look clean lined. The jacket adds a necessary break from the black and the bag adds texture. All she needs is a silk print scarf around the lapels of the jacket and viola ready for chic Euopean travels. Flats or other comfortable walking shoes ensure comfort throught out the day.

Dresses for Fall travel can definetely be pulled off. The long cardigan (in a thin, not chunky knit) and the tights makes this look seasonally appropriate. Add the accessory of the moment gloves and you've got a look. Forego the stacked pumps as she is wearing here and opt for something more foot friendly. A dress that also works layered over pants or leggings gives you more bang for your buck.

Layering at its best. A turtleneck layered under a cardigan make a perfect pairing in cooler weather. Special details such as the ones found on the cardigan give outfits extra interest. The scarf adds European appeal and can be used as a further warming layer. The gloves are functional and on trend. Simple flats with a thin trouser sock complete the look and are comfortable for long days of sightseeing.

My favorite look! A loose cut ,short pea coat is sophisticated in that casual sort of way. The coat layered over a blouse and cardigan combo looks comfortable yet pulled together. Opt for darker neutrals and this is the perfect travel outfit. A wide cut denim trouser adds casual elegance as well. Comfy flats are a must and don't detract from the look. The scarf tied to the handbag adds the required European flair.

Black pants with an interesting jacket make for a chic travel look. The leather handbag in blue takes it a step up by providing some added interest and keeps the outfit from looking too simple. A silky print scarf worn in the hair would complement the outfit and give a flirty European look.

Animal Prints do not seem to be dying out anytime soon. Keep animal prints in check though and limit to accessories. An animal print scarf looks chic and slightly Bridget Bardot retro when tied as a headband. Animal prints are even showing up on jewelry, a low cost, low commitment way to give a nod to the trend. Grrr…

Adventurous souls can give an animal print blouse a shot. Seen on the runways, the animal print blouse will definitely be making appearances on the streets. A subtle print works best in integrating with other travel neutrals.

Sweater Scores

Sweaters are easily one of the most functional trends of the season. Look for sweaters with unique detailing or in different cuts (such as a longer cardigan).

Knit to It

Knits appeared on the runways in a multitude of forms, from ultra-fine cardigans to chunky, cocoonlike concoctions. Knits are an essential layering piece in a fall or winter travel wardrobe and this season's knits look especially cozy.

For this fall, lengthening the standard cardigan gives a nod to the trend as well as being a functional piece of travel clothing. Now that can mean slightly past the hips or longer for a sweater coat effect. V-neck sweaters layered over blouses also provide an easy to achieve runway to reality look.

The key with knits is that they must be lightweight, especially when layered over other clothing items. This will prevent you and your suitcase from appearing bulky.

Another option is the sweater dress, as long as it consists of a fairly light knit. This can be worn on its own or over tights, leggings, or jeans. Resist the temptation to pack the knit ponchos and capes that will also undoubtedly be popular this season. These are not as versatile as cardigans and they add much bulk to your packing. Plus, I’m still not over the poncho craze of a few years ago.

Consider packing a blouse for your European trip. They are silky and therefore lightweight and quick drying. Not to mention they add instant style and can even dress up jeans.

On the Blouse

I always associate blouses with the frilly, ruffly, "powersuity" kind of eighties look. Oh no wait, the best blouses of the season do have some frills, ruffles. Even that eighties airline stewardess staple the tie-neck has made a comeback. However, the shapes do appear slightly more modern and feminine.

I think this trend can make a significant impact on your travel wardrobe. Most blouses are in thin, silky, or sheer materials and right away that is a big advantage in packing light. As long as the blouse is not “dry clean only” the material content makes it ideal for travel.

On the other hand the design can really make it a versatile piece in your travel wardrobe. A blouse can dress up a pair of jeans and also gives extra interest when paired under a cardigan, v-neck sweater, blazer, or trench. The silhouette can also be more forgiving than a structured oxford because some styles skim the body rather than clinging to it.

I think the blouse replaces the billowy tunic for fall. The effect can still be the same if you find a longer one. If you can't stomach a full-on blouse, look for blouse details. Anything with a bit of shimmer comes off as blousy, as do small feminine details. A cardigan helps ground a frilly blouse and keep it from looking too frothy or ethereal. A jacket also lends polish to a blouse.

Gray Goodies

Here's some ways to get in on the gray trend. Since this is an easy trend to pull off check your local stores for plenty more gray items. Remember gray pairs well with black, makes a stunning monochromatic statement and when popped with a color looks fashion forward.

Shades of Gray

Grays were seen all over the runways for Fall ’07. This is great news for the trend conscious traveler because what could be easier to integrate into your travel wardrobe than a versatile neutral such as gray.

Black and gray are a natural pairing and could serve as the color story for your next trip. For the more adventuresome pop the neutrals with an animal print or a bold color accent, such as goldenrod or maize (two of my favorite Crayola crayon names).

The Bold and the Beautiful

The bold colors that appeared on the scene for spring are still going strong. The colors for fall should be more deep, intense, and rich hues of the almost neon brights we’ve been introduced to. Think exaggerated jewel tones and you’ll be right on track: saffron (my personal pick), eggplant, deep cobalt, and rust were most prevalent on the runways. Now purple may be the new black, but that still doesn’t mean you can be dressed head to toe in it, now does it my little aubergines.

Translating the color trend into your travel wardrobe can be accomplished with accessories. Vibrant colored accessories can add sparkle and punch to your all black or neutral ensembles. This fall our options range from handbags, gloves, hats, and jewelry.

Pants for Travel

A nice pair of trousers or pants should follow the same guidelines as for jeans. Boot cut, straight leg, wide leg, or trouser cut pants in quick drying fabrics will serve you best. Avoid overly high or overly low rises, slightly below the natural waistline compliments most figures. Hemlines should be as long as possible without actually touching the ground to give the body the longest line and mask our less than sexy walking shoes. Finding pants in a synthetic blend will minimize bulk and drying time.

Dark neutrals work best to conceal any spots or spills that might happen during the course of your trip. Black, brown, and grey coordinate with other neutrals as well as brighter colors. Khaki’s are a strictly American phenomenon so stick to the darker neutrals. Also save those nifty pants that have zip off legs for when you’re trekking through a rainforest.

Layering tights or silk long john underwear under pants during cold weather help keep you warm. Wool pants usually need to be dry cleaned, making them less than ideal-save them for the boardroom. In the summer, tailored linen trousers offer a fashion savvy option.

During warmer weather Capri, cropped, or gaucho pants provide an alternative to skirts or shorts. My problem with capri’s is that they can look way too casual and they are way too ubiquitous.

Cropped pants tend to shorten you visually unless you are quite tall, full length pants provide the most flattering length of pant. Your footwear will also be more prominent since we loose the benefit of hiding our sensible shoes under a full length pant. However, for those of you that still insist on a shorter length pant a fitted, dressy, or tunic top can elevate the look to a more Jackie O sense of St. Tropez sophistication.

If you are slender, lucky you, you can pull off a slim cut Capri. Paired with a cute top -voila! If you are less than slender you can also sport the look with a tunic top.

A wide or straight cut cropped pant conveys casual elegance as well as balancing a fuller figure. There are even wide cut cropped pants with a comfortable elastic waist. The wide cut skims beautifully over the body. Balance the wide cut with a fitted or structured top. A tunic hides a multitude of sins and looks Riviera worthy.

A Few Words on The Rise of Jeans

The rise on jeans or pants refers to the measurement from the crotch to the top of the waistband. We have all seen the prevalence of low rise jeans in recent years. If you are not into the low rise thing that is fine but it really can be a flattering cut, when not overdone of course to the super low rise or brazilian proportions.

The purpose it serves is to make the derriere area seem smaller and more in proportion to your body. Think about it, if you have a pair of pants with a waistband that is at or above your navel there is a lot of extra material between the top of the waistband and your bottom. From behind your derriere can look like sag city with all that extra material no matter how many lunges you have logged in the gym.

In a lower rise pant the material starts just above your derriere highlighting it in a more flattering way. That being said it is best to select pants with a rise no higher than slightly below your belly button. Anything higher will be unflattering, I won’t even mention Mom jeans. While we’re on the subject please no pleated, tapered, or relaxed fit styles either. If you are not a size 2 that is no problem, I’m not either! There are plenty of flattering pants out there as well as little tricks for disguising problem areas.

For those of you into the low rise jean, just a friendly reminder that not everyone wants to see your "business" every time you bend or sit down. Fortunately tee shirts come in longer lengths to help avoid this problem. If there is a huge gap a tailor can take in the jeans a bit. Some designer denim is also cut higher in the back than in the front to help remedy this. Forego the ultra low rise for travel, you will be bending and moving about more so it’s best to leave these in your closet.

Jean Styles for Travel

Boot cut styles compliment many body types. This style of jean flares slightly out from the knee. This style has become increasingly popular thanks to a nearly universal flattering fit. Boot leg styles can be found in various sizes to complement many body types. The prevalence of boot leg styles make it the easiest style of jean to select since it is readily available at most clothing stores at various price points.

Straight leg styles are a classic option. Make sure that they are indeed straight leg without a hint of a taper and that the waist is at least below the navel. Straight leg jeans can work on different body types as well. When worn with a longer tunic top or with a dress (yes that’s right I said dress) they can skim over problem areas.

The trouser cut jean has become my personal favorite. This cut has all the advantages of denim with an added dose of sophistication. My quality of life has truly improved since buying my trouser cut jeans, I wear them all the time. The leg is a fuller cut which can skim over problem areas. They also usually have a wider, more tailored waistband than jeans which helps provide a little more lock and load to the tummy area. I wear mine with everything from trainers to heels, they are that versatile.

Remember when choosing jeans for travel to look for styles with some synthetic content-such as spandex, elasticine, or lycra. The higher the synthetic content the easier to launder while on the road because it will dry faster.

Can you wear Jeans to Europe? Oui, oui, si, si!

In the past, denim was not considered appropriate to pack for a European trip. However, times have changed and while the classic European woman may not have incorporated denim into her repertoire, her daughter probably owns several pairs.

As you can see from the photo here, I think I really have to revise that statement. This chic Parisian mom is wearing jeans and her daughter is not, and by the way the mom still looks fab and modern and age appropriate-I love French women!

The youth in Europe wear jeans and you will see them everywhere. However, the jeans they wear are well fitted, in some cases quite tight but not in a vulgar way (well maybe in Italy but that’s a different story).

Seasoned lightweight packers have also shunned denim because of its thickness, weight, and long drying time. Despite these drawbacks if you wear jeans on a regular basis you can include them in your travel wardrobe, with a few caveats. After all I can’t deny myself or any one else their trusty denim. A lightweight jean would be ideal but can be difficult to track down so it is best to limit yourself to one pair. Wearing your jeans on travel days (plane and train) will keep them from taking precious room in your luggage.

Jeans in a dark rinse are more versatile and less casual than medium or light wash denim.

Stay away from any sort of overly washed, bleached, or whiskered styles.

Look for a flattering and proper fit, no relaxed or tapered styles

The hem should almost hit the floor, this gives the longest line to the body and can help conceal less than sexy walking shoes.

Try on jeans with your travel shoes to ensure the right hem length or have them hemmed accordingly.

Jeans with stretch will not only be more comfortable they also have synthetic materials that slightly decrease bulk.

Wearing your jeans on travel days (plane and train) will keep them from taking precious room in your luggage.

If you are lucky enough to already have found your “go to” jeans by all means pack them, as long as they fit in with my guidelines. Check the condition to ensure that there are no frayed hems, no sagging, or obvious spots. If the fit is not quite there, a tailor can help refine the fit.

What Kind of Dressing? French or Italian

If you're at a loss for what to wear when traveling to Italy or France rest assured that my general Travel Clothes Guidelines will get you through your Europe with flying colors. Basic fitted clothes in darker colors and a few distinctive accessories will carry you far and provide that bit of chic that we all strive for. However, I thought it might be fun to address the way that French and Italian women differ in the way they dress. The basic formula is still the same but there are subtle differences.

French women dress classic yet subtly sexy, Italian women are more va-va-va-voom in their sexiness

French women stick to classic clothing, Italian women are classic but they do like trendy clothing as well

French women wear simple hair and makeup, Italian women get a bit more gussied up and they love blond highlights

French women wear fitted clothing, Italians wear tighter clothing

French women may use color as an accent, sometimes Italians wear more color

Some sort of scarf is always worn by both Italian and French women

Heels are always worn by both Italian and French women

What to Wear in Europe for Summer

Wanting ideas for how to dress for Europe in the remaining days of summer? Along with my Travel Clothes Guidelines here's a few other things to consider for summer packing:
1) Simple sundresses always look great and can take you from day to night with a few accessory changes. My personal fave right now is the Maxi Dress.
2) Big bold sunglasses are a must for a chic and cool look.
3) Summer accessories can skew chunkier and earthier, think wooden bangles or bead necklaces.
4) Choose simple sandals that are comfortable enough for walking.
5) Shorts are not commonly worn in Europe, but if you must -some structured Bermudas or tailored short shorts would look good with an empire or flowy top to dress it up.
6) Skirts are a great alternative to shorts, and pair well with a simple tank as seen below.
7) Dresses really are the be all end all, for me anyway, as far as packing light- I would pack four dresses, a belt, and a cardigan or wrap and be done with it-easy, easy.

Halleluiah for Headbands! When traveling you don’t always have time to primp and a headband provides a chic and quick solution to fixing your hair. So make sure and pack a headband to add color and style to your neutral travel ensemble.

Headbands are uber-trendy right now and can be found in a multitude of styles, prints, and colors. Choose one that complements or coordinates with your travel wardrobe. Silk scarves also make beautiful headbands so let your scarves do double duty. Fresh and chic fix for bad hair, love it!

Why Pack Light for Europe?

I cannot emphasize enough the importance of packing light. What do I mean by packing light, well it means being able to “carry-on” your luggage on the airplane.

No checking in suitcases, no waiting at the carousel wondering if your luggage made it, no wondering who may have rifled through your belongings while in transit.

Packing light requires some planning, but when running at full speed to make your overnight train to Venice you will be happy that you have a light load.

Packing light will help you avoid the pain in the butt (and back!) of shlepping your heavy loads of luggage from train station to pensione. Even if you take a taxi you still have to navigate a crowded train station to get to the taxi stand, a task made much easier with a lighter load.

Don’t forget that you will also have to accommodate your luggage onto trains. You will feel silly taking up multiple racks of luggage space when the European traveler next to you has their entire luggage reduced down to one bag.

Packing light also means you will not be horrified when you realize that the cute little pensione you’ve booked in Florence is on the 5th floor (that’s over 100 steps if anyone is counting) of a building with no elevator.

Please take these scenarios into account when you get the urge to pack a separate outfit for every day of your trip. The old cliché of “less is more” definitely applies and should guide you in choosing what items to pack. With my detailed suggestions I’ll show you how it is possible to pack light without sacrificing style.

After every trip I always regret not taking enough photos and not at the very least outlining my experiences of the day. Where's your Stash?

Carrying emergency funds while traveling is always a good idea because you never know when wayward pickpocket’s hands will find their way into your wallet or purse.

Most of your valuables should be carried in some sort of security pouch (money belt, neck pouch, etc.) but for a little extra piece of mind you can store extra funds in your flops.

The flops themselves meet Travelista standards as they are neither too sporty (in darker colors) nor too cheesy (like those super platform flip flops that I hate!). The black and brown versions are sleek and simple and will complement most travel ensembles. I have also found Reef sandals to be comfortable enough for walking in.

Reef sandals were originally geared for surfer types, but remember not to adapt a casual surfer look when planning what to pack for Europe. To keep the flops from looking too causal pair them with skirts and simple day dresses.

Guys can pair them with shorts if your shirt has some structure such as a button down shirt or polo. A tee shirt is way too casual to wear with shorts and flops, think Barcelona babe instead of beach bum. Pairing the flops with pants and a fitted tee shirt also works.

Linen or lightweight trousers are best for summer travel. Some European guys like wearing ¾ length or Capri length pants in summer but it is debatable as to how stylish this option is.

If you’re secure with your security pouch and don’t feel the need for an extra stash compartment consider the other dual function flops by Reef. The Dram contains a “canteen” in the heel with a screw cap, where you can store a shot size worth of duty free liquor. The Fanning style contains a bottle opener on the bottom of the sole. You MUST wear a scarf in Europe

Alright I’m about to give you the true secret to achieving a European look, it’s all about the scarves and wraps.

If you don’t wear a scarf in Europe you will feel absolutely naked, because EVERYONE wears them, seriously EVERYONE. On my first trip to Paris, the first day I had to go buy a scarf because nobody gave me the memo that they were de rigeur. I had to figure it out the hard way. Don’t make this same mistake.

I think there is some sort of law that forbids Europeans from leaving the house without a scarf somewhere on their person, even if it’s in the form of a turban (which I’ve seen work on really cute French girls).

The ways in which Europeans tie their scarves have to be some sort of family secret. The scarves are tied in a deceptively simple manner. While I cannot profess to having cracked the code of European scarf tying, a few basic looks will carry you far. Trust me scarves will not be going out of fashion in Europe anytime soon.

Since we aim to blend in with our European counterparts a scarf or wrap become necessary accessories. Fortunately there is much function to be found in them.

Scarves can really help you fight the “blahs” of wearing the same set of travel clothes for the duration of your trip. A thin weave pashmina style wrap can be used as a shawl or scarf and can be worn several ways. Large wraps can be used as blankets on planes and trains as well.

Thin and lightweight silky scarves take up little packing space so please splurge and bring several. Scarves can introduce color and pattern into your neutral travel wardrobe and of course add that little je ne sais quoi that we’re all after. Different styles and sizes can be worn different ways.

Young ladies, I know that scarfs are typically thought to be a bit on the maw maw side but they can look quite youthful when worn correctly. An oblong scarf is the easiest style to work with because it can be worn around the neck, as a belt, or even a headband. Scarves combat “couchette head” after an all night train trip by working as a babushka or headband. Even just tying a scarf to your handbag adds an element of nonchalant chic.

On a more practical note, scarves can help you keep track of your travel mates. In crowded streets surrounded by a sea of dark clothing it’s difficult to find someone. There were several times on a trip with my mom that we would lose track of each other in the course of window shopping. The only way I could find her was to look for the flash of pink and white on her vintage Christian Dior scarf. Thank goodness otherwise I might still be wandering the streets of Sienna asking people if they had seen my mommy, embarrassing if you’re over 30. What’s the Skinny
Ah the dreaded Skinny Jean, fashion can be cruel sometimes. Any article of clothing labeled “skinny” of course causes us to cringe. However, thanks to tunics and layering dresses we can get the most out of this look by wearing longer tops that hide any problem areas.

Unless you yourself are skinny, treat the skinny as a more structured legging and pair them with long or voluminous tops. Layering also makes these pants not only trendy but versatile while traveling in Europe because you know many a European gal will be rocking the skinny. Pair these with a comfortable shoe for sightseeing such as a comfortable ballet style flat or a walking sandal with a slight wedge.

Technicolor for Travel

Bright hues were seen all over the runways for Spring 2007. Think colors that skew a little 80’s: royal blue, yellow, kelly green, bright purple.

A big bold splash of color livens up an otherwise neutral travel wardrobe. All of a sudden a bold royal blue works with basic black.

Consider a shot of color when planning out your travel wardrobe. Limit your color frenzy to accessories, its hard to coordinate a whole travel wardrobe around fuchsia and turquoise.

Dresses for Travel

Dress you up in my love
I know there are those of you who can’t abandon your fashionista ways while traveling. There is no need to not include a few trends when packing for your next trip to Europe.

A fabulous dress is the "must have" item for spring and summer. Dresses have to be one of the strongest trends this season. This is great for news for anyone planning their travel wardrobe because there will be many styles to choose from.

What could be easier than throwing on a dress and calling it a day? Dresses are a natural for your travel wardrobe. There is no one dress shape that is dominating, but I think the most versatile and flattering styles are the shirt dress and the wrap dress. I’m also a big fan of the maxi length dresses as long as the top is light and strappy.

If you choose a dress with versatility in mind your travel wardrobe possibilities will multiply beyond wearing the dress on its own - thanks to the layering trend. Dresses can be layered over a thin knit cardigan or thin knit tee in cooler weather. Of course you can always throw a cardigan over the dress when you need cover up your shoulders upon entering Italian churches. It can be worn over skinny jeans, straight leg jeans, or over leggings. I’ve always been a fan of the dress over pants look myself, I’m not exactly a dress girl but over pants I can totally rock a dress. Thin, lightweight dresses will keep the look from appearing too bulky. A ballet flat completes the look.

Wearing a dress over pants requires a bit of fine tuning to ensure that your proportions are correct to avoid looking short. The dress should not really pass the knee, unless you are tall. It’s important that the pant is cut close to your leg, that’s why a skinny, straight, or slight boot cut pant works best.

Remember Travelista clothing guidelines when selecting a dress. Look for lightweight thin knits that will dry quickly when hand washed (in your hotel sink). Synthetic knits are super lightweight and will dry quickly, polyester has come a long way baby and is not a bad fabric for the girl trying to pack light.

Other good materials include machine washable lyocell(modal), acrylic, rayon, nylon, spandex, lycra, and silk. Cotton is fine as long as it is combined with another synthetic material. 100% cotton clothes take forever to dry, unless it is in an ultrafine knit.

Dark neutrals work best. A pattern is alright as long as it still coordinates with your other travel clothes. A flattering fit will take you far in blending in with chic European locals and will make you feel comfortable and confident.

Those going a more classic route need to just ensure that the dress pairs well with whatever walking shoe or sandal you’ll be wearing during your trip. Adding a fabulous belt gives you an opportunity to accessorize and really make the dress your own.

Speaking of accessorizing I think dresses look fab when one accessory is totally overdone, such as multiple strands of necklaces or an armful of bangles. A more romantic look can be achieved with wearing a scarf headband. Wearing a long strappy sun dress topped with a long silk scarf as a doo rag (or biba style) and large hoop earrings will give you that sophisticated Ibiza hippy look (try and channel your inner Jade Jagger).

There are many dress options right now available for any budget at Target, Old Navy, Banana Republic, Anthropologie, LaRedoute.com, and of course high end stores such as Neimans and Nordstroms will have an exquisite variety. Once you hear your first “Ciao Bella!” in Italy you’ll know you’ve pulled off the look. Happy hunting for your perfect travel dress!

What to wear in Europe?

Why is what you wear to Europe so important you ask? Does it really matter? Well yes, yes it does.

Even if you don’t give a flip about fashion there are a few things you should think about before you dust off your fanny pack.

First of all Europeans as a general rule dress up more than your casual Friday, make that casual everyday American.

Europeans dress to impress and as a means to communicate their good taste, it sounds pretentious I know but its true - just go with it. The amazing thing is that they accomplish this not by buying out designer showrooms each fashion season but by buying a few items of quality that they ingeniously accessorize. This is the essence of my packing and travel fashion philosophy.

Yes, there are those that can afford the luxury of the latest and greatest designer offerings and they do look breathtakingly fabulous. Alas we are not going to Europe to walk the runway. We’re going to walk the streets and become part of the cultural landscape and try not to disrupt it with bright, white tennis shoes.

“Dressing the Part” of the European also helps dispel a tourist mentality. I don’t like feeling like a tourist or an outsider while traveling. I prefer the idea of blending in with the locals and soaking up the culture in a more integrated way. If you don’t look like a tourist you won’t automatically be dismissed as one, which can lead to a more authentic experience.

They will still let you into the country even if you are donning your brightest, whitest tennis shoes along with your swooshiest track suit. However, trust me when I tell you, you’ll feel much better while there even if you put forth just the slightest effort to fashion a stylish travel wardrobe. Want to look cute while traveling this summer, well look no further than the wedge heel.

Perhaps it’s the wedges ability to give extra height and stability while still making you look in fashion. It’s much more practical to wear wedges than to teeter around on skinny little stiletto heels especially during travel to Europe.

12 Tips on What to Wear in Europe

When packing for your trip to Europe it's not all about functionality like hiking boots and tennis shoes. Yet it's not also about being a slave to fashion, wearing stilettos and inpractical clothing.

Rather when traveling to Europe it's better to blend in with Europeans and they generally wear dark clothing in fitted cuts. They add accessories such as scarves, jewelry, or a distinctive handbag to compete the look.

1. When you pack, make everything count. Clothing must intermix to layer easily and complete different outfits

2. Dark neutrals work best with distinctive accessories or pack all black. Most Europeans wear dark colors

3. Lightweight and quick drying (these launder easily in your hotel sink) clothes allow you to pack light

4. High synthetic fabric clothing dries quickly (lyocell, modal, nylon, acrylic, rayon, polyester)

5. 100% cotton this takes forever to dry and isn’t as compact as synthetics (a cotton blend is OK)

6. Flattering fits will make you look more European

7. Avoid loose fitting clothing (relaxed fit jeans, etc.). You may not feel out of place here but in Europe you’ll feel dowdy (compared to chic and glam Europeans) in comfortable but loose fitting clothes

8. Dark colored footwear blends in easily with dark clothing and minimizes focus on sensible but not so sexy shoes.

9. Padded foot beds, EVA insoles, and rubber soles, provide cushioning while walking and ease fatigue.

10. When choosing a walking sandal look for the same features that you would in a walking shoe

11. Waterproof sport sandals serve double duty for hostellers (to wear in showers), light hikers, and those hitting the beaches.

12. Accessories will help make the most of your look. Scarves, jewelry, or a distinctive handbaga add personality and liven up neutrals.

29 Things NOT to wear in Europe

As the high tourist season in Europe approaches I started thinking about some of the best ways to avoid being branded a “tourist”. Apparently Americans have been branded the worst dressed tourists by a survey of European hoteliers. Well let's try and change this.

What do you wear to Europe? Well there are differening opinions. Some advocate wearing what you would normally wear to Europe, just so long as you are comfortable. This may seem all well and good until you arrive in Europe and immediately note the vast difference between the way tourists dress and the typical urban European. Tourists really do stand out, which while your clothes may be comfortable your psyche may not.

Other experts state that it is too difficult to pull off a European look. Oh Please! It’s not about sporting the latest fashions. If all you do is wear black you are 100% completely ahead of the game.

Tourists traveling in groups may be unable to avoid the dreaded "tourist" label. However for the independent traveler it may be well worth the effort to blend in for a more authentic experience. Will people still know you are a tourist? If you follow my Travelista Guidelines for travel clothes no one will know you’re a tourist until you attempt to order café au lait in your best high school French. Feel free to add any other tourist fashion faux pas to the list.

It's Official...Americans Worst Dressed Tourists

According to a survey of European hoteliers Americans were deemed the worst dressed tourists with Britain coming in second. On the upside Americans are regarded as polite and tidy coming in second behind Japanese tourists.

The survey commissioned by Expedia is based on the responses of 15,000 hoteliers across Europe. Why is what you wear to Europe so important you ask? Does it really matter? Well yes, yes it does. Even if you don’t give a flip about looking stylish there are a few things you should think about before you dust off your fanny pack.

First of all Europeans as a general rule dress up more than your casual Friday, make that casual everyday American. Europeans dress to impress and as a means to communicate their good taste, it sounds pretentious I know but it’s true - just go with it. The amazing thing is that they accomplish this not by buying out designer showrooms each fashion season but by buying a few items of quality that they ingeniously accessorize. This is the essence of my packing and travel fashion philosophy.

Yes there are those that can afford the luxury of the latest and greatest designer offerings and they do look breathtakingly fabulous. Alas we are not going to Europe to walk the runway. We’re going to walk the streets and become part of the cultural landscape and try not to disrupt it with bright, white tennis shoes.

“Dressing the Part” of the European also helps dispel a tourist mentality. Blending in allows you to soaking up the culture in a more integrated way. If you don’t look like a tourist you won’t automatically be dismissed as one, which can lead to a more authentic experience.

They will still let you into the country even if you are donning your brightest, whitest tennis shoes along with your swooshiest track suit. However, trust me when I tell you, you’ll feel much better while there even if you put forth just the slightest effort to fashion a stylish travel wardrobe.

17 TSA Toiletry Hacks

Fortunately or unfortunately the TSA has put into place rules that drastically affect the way we pack toiletries for Europe. Specifically, how we pack our liquids, gels, and aerosols.

As of 9/26/06 the rules basically state that all carry on toiletries (liquid, gels, or aerosols) must be in 3 ounce bottles or smaller AND these bottles must all be contained within a clear quart size zip top bag.

As soon as you attempt this exercise in frustration you may realize that you are more high maintenance than you thought. It's pretty frightening to account for all the lotions and potions required on a daily basis. TSA guidelines do provide exceptions for breast milk, formula, and prescription drugs; double check the site for specifics.

If you simply cannot cram all your toiletries into the mandated quart size Ziploc bag you can always check your luggage. However, a Travelista will always try to pack light which means carrying on your luggage with you on the airplane.

Alternatives to toiletries that come in the traditional gel, liquid, or aerosol form are available. Best of all, these don't have to be displayed for all to see in your Ziploc bag. Other toiletry items can be found in 3 oz. sizes on websites such as Drugstore.com, Beauty.com, Sephora.com, and minimus.biz.

Another option is to only pack your absolute bare essentials and once you arrive at your destination buy all the liquid and gel based toiletries your little heart desires.

Tips for getting around TSA rules for toiletries
1. Makeup wipes replace liquid facial soap
2. Tooth powders and dental mitts can be used instead of toothpaste
3. Effervescent tablets can be used instead of mouthwash
4. Antibacterial wipes instead of sanitizing gel
5. Hair Bars replace shampoo and / or conditioners
6. Baby shampoo can be used as a body wash as well (double duty)
7. All in one shampoo & conditioners do double duty
8. Natural products such as Dr. Bronners Organic liquid soap (shampoo, body wash, and mouthwash) & Campsuds (shampoo, body wash, laundry wash) serve multiple uses
9. Lotion wipes provide an alternative to lotion
10. Mineral powder foundation can replace liquid foundation and concealer
11. Facial moisturizers with sunscreen serve double duty
12. Good old fashioned bar soap can replace shower gel
13. Hair Powder (Aveda)/ Hair wax can replace styling gel or hair spray
14. Cake mascara instead of liquid mascara
15. Lipstick ,lip gloss pencils, or lip balms instead of liquid lip gloss
16. Solid deodorant, deodorant pads, or wipes instead of gel or aerosol deodorant
17. Sunscreen wipes instead of sunscreen lotion

Vino for Voyages

This portable wine glass is a fabulous find for the traveler who doesn’t want to drink European wine “wino” style straight outta the bottle as I have been forced to do.

There are wonderful bottles of wine to be enjoyed on the cheap while traveling throughout Europe, every bottle I’ve had was good and I never paid more than 8 Euros. They even sell handy half liter bottles for short and sweet train trips.

On my first trip to Europe I brought an aluminum folding cup but it completely altered the taste of the wine. I then was forced to drink out of the bottle, a little less than classy especially while picnicking in the Jardin Botanico in Madrid but I bemused old men while doing so, at least I've got that.
